Does your cat suffer from cystitis?
Cat cystitis or feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) describes a collection of conditions that can affect the bladder and/or urethra of cats.
Cats suffering from cystitis will often make frequent trips to the litter tray, passing only small amounts of urine each time. Since they have to go so frequently sometimes they may not quite make the litter tray and urine can be blood stained. If you think your cat is suffering from cystitis the first thing to do is to visit your vet for diagnosis and treatment.
In the majority of cases (55 to 69%) it is unknown what causes FLUTD. However, it has been suggested that stress may be a factor.
If your cat is suffering from recurring FLUTD for which a clear cause has not been found, you may want to consider plugging in a Feliway Diffuser in the room where the cat spends most of its time. Leave the diffuser plugged in continuously for at least 4 weeks and replace the refill as required.
If a cat has a history of FLUTD a diffuser should be plugged in before and during any anticipated stressful episodes e.g. Christmas or moving house.
